The Department utilized a committee process to research and form recommendations pertaining <br />to the use of the funds from the Technology Grant. All recommendations support line level <br />law enforcement functions and serve to enhance public safety. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDED EXPENDITURES <br /> <br />Alternate Light Source: $15,000 <br /> <br />The purchase of an alternate light source would greatly enhance our departinent's ability to <br />locate certain types of evidence that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Patrol officers and <br />investigators could transport this portable piece of equipment to a crime scene and use it to <br />identify where items of evidentiary value were located. Once officers are able to locate <br />potential evidence they can use more conventional techniques to collect and package the <br />evidence for transportation to a crime lab for further evaluation. <br /> <br />Satellite Cell Phones: $3,000 <br /> <br />In order to be prepared for a potential disaster, such as a major earthquake, fire, train <br />derailment, or terrorist attack, we believe it would be prudent to purchase four (4) satellite cell <br />phones. These phones would give our command staff the capacity to communicate during an <br />emergency even if all regular phone communications were inoperative and allow for critical <br />decisions to be made in a timely manner. The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department has been <br />using satellite phones for several years and our purchase of these kinds of phones will <br />additionally allow us to directly communicate with the Fire Department even if regular radio <br />transmissions are incapacitated. <br /> <br />F.A.T.S. Machine AR15 Rifle and Software: $10,000 <br /> <br />We need to upgrade our firearms training system (FATS) to include an AR15 rifle attachment. <br />Last year our department transitioned our entire patrol fleet from standard shotguns to AR15 <br />rifles in an effort to provide a more accurate weapon to protect our police officers and the <br />general public. The FATS training system we currently have installed in our briefing room <br />needs a specially designed AR15 rifle so that our officers can receive the proper training in the <br />deployment and use of the weapon. New and improved software would also be purchased to <br />provide new training scenarios. The rifle will cost approximately $6,300 and the updated <br />software will be about $3,500. <br /> <br />Field Evidence Kits: $2,500 <br /> <br />Based upon a recommendation of our equipment committee we would like to purchase <br />individual evidence kits for each officer on patrol. This would ensure each officer has the <br /> <br />SR:02:133 Page 2 <br /> <br /> <br />
