VI

ACTION ITEMS
2.

Approval of the 2001-02 Implementation Plan for the Youth Master Plan

Pleasanton is committed to nurturing a safe, supportive community that is responsive to
the full range of needs of all youth and their families. In partnership with youth, we will
provide the essential environment to stimulate young people to achieve their individual
potential as responsible, contributing adults.
-Vision Statement of the Youth Master Plan (p.3)

On June 4, 1998, the Board of Trustees of the Pleasanton Unified School District and the
Pleasanton City Council, at a joint meeting, approved a staff recommendation calling for
the establishment of a Youth Master Plan for Pleasanton. The Youth Master Plan was
finalized and adopted by both the Board of Trustees and the City Council in the spdng of
2001.

As with any multi-year plan, the organization can effectively implement only part of the total
plan in any single year. To attempt the full implementation of the plan in a single year will
drain both the human and fiscal resources of the organization. To ensure the successful
implementation of the Youth Master Plan over several years, the School/City Liaison
Committee met on June 29, 2001, to prioritize goals and objectives for each major theme
to be implemented during the 2001-02 school year. (The prioritized goals and objectives
follow the narrative.)

On August 16, 2001, the elected officials on the School/City Liaison Committee directed
district and city staff to develop an implementation that could be realistically implemented
during the 2001-02 within the resources of the district and state.

On August 27, 2001, district and city staff met and discussed how the identified goals and
objectives could be specifically implemented during the 200!-02 school year. District and
city staff, as did the School/City Liaison Committee, focused on what was already in place
upon which to build and attempted to identify which organization(s) would take
responsibility for the implementation of the specific goals and objectives. In designing an
implementation plan, staff recognized that it was critical to recognize the current workloads
of each organization. For the district, the major tasks for the year have already been
identified in the 2001-02 Shared Vision.

Another important factor is the understanding that the implem.entation of the Youth Master
Plan does not rest solely with the district and/or city staffs. The successful implementation
of the Youth Master Plan depends on a partnership that includes community-wide
participation.

The goals and objectives selected by the School/City Liaison Committee for
implementation in 2001-02 school year by-and-large are consistent with both the Strategic
Plan and the 2001-02 Shared Vision adopted by the Board. Wherever appropriate, the
district will use its resources to support the implementation of the identified goals and
objectives.
