Large Open Space Areas - The Conservation Element contains a policy <br /> protecting all large continuous areas of open space from urban <br /> intrusion. Some 10,580 acres of the 28,000 acre planning area <br /> are designated as open space. In addition, 5,200 acres of sand <br /> and gravel harvesting area and 1,985 acres of low density resi- <br /> dential area provide major open space values. <br /> <br />Land Consumption <br /> <br />Protection of Lands of Intrinsic Value - The Conservation Element <br /> designates all remaining lands of intrinsic value recharge areas, <br /> outstanding scenic areas, valuable park sites - as park land or <br /> open space. <br /> <br />Higher Residential Density - The adopted General Plan allocates <br /> land so that future construction will be sixty-seven (67) per- <br /> cent single family, thirty-three (33) percent multiple compared <br /> to the present nineteen (19) percent multiple. Multiple resi- <br /> dential density will average 15 units per acre. Besides the <br /> actual land use designation with which zoning must be consis- <br /> tent, the General Plan contains policies to effectuate this <br /> increased residential density. <br /> <br />Open <br /> <br />Space Near Urban Fringes The General Plan designates lands <br />surrounding the urbanized portion of the city as open space or <br />as open space functioning designations such as agriculture and <br />sand and gravel harvesting. <br /> <br />YMT/Air Quality <br /> <br />Transportation Related Measures <br /> <br />BART - The City is committed to securing continued BART bus service <br /> to Pleasanton and to a future fixed rail line. The General Plan <br /> designates sites for future BART stations at or near major com- <br /> mercial and employment centers. <br /> <br />Park and Ride Lots and Bus Shelters - Pleasanton recognizes both of <br /> these as potentially useful means to encourage mass transit <br /> usage and is committed to studying the feasibility and effec- <br /> tiveness of these measures at a time in the future when Pleas- <br /> anton's ridership reaches a level to warrant such action. <br /> <br />Dial-A-Ride - Although a recent study found a City-wide <br /> feasible, Pleasanton commits itself to participate <br /> wide feasibility study of a valley transit system. <br /> <br />system un- <br />in a valley- <br /> <br />Bicycle Lanes - Expansion and continuation of the existing bicycle <br /> lane plans is a continuing project. <br /> <br />Bicycle Racks Racks with lock provisions will be a standard con- <br /> dition of approval for major attracting centers. The City will <br /> install such facilities at government installations (buildings, <br /> parks, playgrounds, etc.) presently lacking such facilities and <br /> at all new developments likely to attract bicyclists. <br /> <br />ii <br /> <br /> <br />
