77

Ms. Mohr suggested that the existing three names be removed
and the center itself be identified as "The Rose Pavillion" since
apparently all the tenants use that simultaneously with their own
names.

Ms. Scribner asked Staff if there was a conscious decision to
eliminate the center identification on the sign since she too feels
that it would be better to eliminate identifying individual
businesses and advertise the center as a whole.

Mr. Swift could not recollect for certain. However, he felt
that the sign was submitted as is, with the rose logo.

Mr. Tarver remembered that a car dealer recently had asked to
include additional names that would increase the number from four
names to five.

Mr. Mercer did not have an objection to adding two more names
to the pylon sign. Both of these businesses have come to town,
made substantial investments in the community and are providing
services to the citizens that weren't here before. This generates
substantial sales tax and for the sake of a couple of more lines on
a sign on the freeway, it's the least that can be done to help them
generate more business, which would generate more business for
Pleasanton, as well.

Even though he has spoken against pylons signs in the past,
Mr. Tarvet would like to see the existing sign incorporate the name
"Rose Pavillion" on the sign since it's already in place.

Mr. Mercer said that perhaps a sign could be placed on the
Santa Rita side identifying the Rose Pavillion if the tenant names
took up too much room.

Mr. Schnugg said there are three signs currently in existence
which specify the Rose Pavillion identification in various
locations.

Ms. Mohr felt in view of what has been said and presented this
evening that what is being looked at is a completely different
situation. The signage program should be reevaluated in its
entirety and not one piece at a time.

Mr. Mercer stated that the issue before Council tonight is not
a total review of all the signs just whether two more names should
be added to the Rose Pavillion sign.

Mr. Mercer, therefore, made a motion to approve the
installation of two additional tenant names to the existing freeway
pylon sign for the Rose Pavillion Shopping Center, as set forth in
the Staff Report.

10-15-91 13
