ROLL CALL VOTE:
AYES: Commissioners Hess, Loll, Molz, Rivera, Scotto, Woodworth, and Chairperson
Seebach
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None
5. Presentation from Non Profit Agencies and Recommendation to allocate Community
Grant Funds for Fiscal Year 2010/2011
Mr. Jorgensen advised that staff had reviewed nine (9) applications for funding from the
Community Grants program in the Civic Arts Category. These requests totaled $56,919, and
the available funds for allocation were $40,000, which was approximately 70% of the
requested amount. He advised that staff found each of the applications to be of merit and was
therefore recommending that each project be funded at 70% of their requested amount for a
total allocation of $39,840.
The Commission was asked to look at the long -range goals of the Commission, consider the
best possible use of the funds, and be assertive in what direction it would like the funds to be
moved towards and make recommendations to the agencies.
Chairperson Seebach opened the meeting for agency presentation at 7:20 p.m.
Pleasanton Art League, Art is For Everyone, Pat Smith and Linda Jeffrey Sailors thanked the
Commission for its past funding recommendations and advised that PAL continues to provide
great workshops at affordable rates. The Commission was advised that PAL tries to fill a great
need within the community by keeping arts alive. Ms. Smith advised that approximately 50
people, the majority being Pleasanton residents, had attended demonstrations. Their
challenge has always been venue locations, but the last year's art show held at the new Alviso
Adobe Community Park had been fantastic. The League is currently working on several
events for the Firehouse Arts Center. Ms. Sayles advised that PAL's demonstrations are
helping to bring the quality of art in Pleasanton up to great standards.
Commissioner Hess discussed with Ms. Smith the number of participants in the events that
were duplicative. Ms. Smith felt that was difficult to answer because many artists work in
different mediums, however the number of attendees was growing. She also provided
information about the number of senior participants versus youth participants.
Commissioner Loll thanked Ms. Smith and Ms. Sayles for what PAL was doing for the
community, and indicated he was excited that PAL was going to be a part of the Firehouse
Arts Center. He encouraged them to think about ways of combining the talents of PAL with
those of other organizations. Commissioner Loll stated that he would like to see a process
where this organization and others can build and combine its talents when applying for
funding.
Civic Arts Commission
March 1, 2010
Page 3
