LETTER 15
13,e-ember 30, 2008 g rt I_11V;
Aft 30
Janice Stem, AICP CITY OF PLcA 1oN
Principal Planner PLANNING DIVISION
0 immunity Development/Planning
2111 Old Bernal Avenue
P. 0. Box 520
Pleasanton, CA 94566 -0802
Dear Janice,
As you suggested in November, we arc submitting the Spotomo Family's
cu mments on the Draft General Plan Update_ We consider our comments to be important,
especially in light of the recent passage of Measures PP QQ concerning "Save Our
H 11e. People need to be fully aware that these hill properties are privately owned
agricultural lands whose privacy and economic investment must be respected.
For moss references our remarks are mainly for clarification to avoid confusion on
tit; part of the general public. there are a few instances in which we pose questions that
m.ry require rewriting the pasage_ Where history is specifically cited, the Spotorno
name has been noticeably omitted, while others with far less history have been
pr)minently named. The Spotorno Family since 1867 has contributed much to this
community. Such historical citations should be accurate and all inclusive.
It seems in this General Plan Update, agriculture is given an historical nod and a
very brief mention that "some agriculture still exists mainly in the Happy Valley area
but is given no further importance as to how the City intends to continue w support this
wily of life that gave birth to what Pleasanton is today. By way of further information,
wv offer tha following questions and challenges:
How have the work of the Vision 2010 and the Tri- Valley Business
Council entities been incorporated into this General Plan? Al, as co-chair of the 15 1
Working Landscape Committee, as well as many others put a great deal of time
and effort over the years to devise ways In ensure sustainability of agriculture as
well as of all the amenities enjoyed by the citizens of the Tri- Valley.
Regarding the open space issue. there is a conflict with the sustainability
of agriculture versus predators that has yet to be resolved. Everyone loves the 15.2
coyotes and mountain lions, but when it comes to protecting livestock, there is no
support. East Bay Regional Parks and Stale Fish and Game laugh when asked the
question, claiming they don't have accurate wildlife population figures. nor do
