151

MINUTES OF THE JOINT WORKSHOP MEETING
ON NOVEMBER 3, 1992.
REGARDING THE MAIN STREET DESIGN AND MATERIALS

The joint meeting of the City Council and Planning Commission
was called to order by Vice Mayor Ben Tarver in the City Council
Chambers at 6:00 p.m.

Those in attendance were Vice Mayor Ben-Tarver, Councilmembers
Dorothy Scribner and Karin Mohr; Planning Commissioners Marcelline
Mahern, Jack Hovingh, Harold McGuirk, Robert Wright, and Gene
Finch. Those members abstaining from participation due to
conflicts of interest were: Mayor Ken Mercer, Councilmember Bob
Butler, and Planning Commissioner Sharrell Michelotti.

Mr. Tarver indicated this is a workshop only and no action
will be taken. The purpose of the meeting is to make
recommendations on the construction materials and street furniture
for downtown.

Jerry Iserson, Principal Planner, indicated the purpose of the
meeting is to present design proposals for the streetscape on Main
Street. Council has made the decision on lanes and street trees,
etc. It is now time to discuss design development aspects for
sidewalk material, color, street furniture, etc. Also a decision
should be made regarding the special area in front of the museum.
Mr. Iserson further indicated there would be a presentation from
the Centennial Committee regarding proposed tile art work and from
the Convention and Visitors Bureau regarding the "Buy a Brick"
plan.

Mr. Iserson indicated the proposals had been presented to
various organizations and committees involved with downtown, such
as the Chamber of Commerce and the Pleasanton Downtown Association.
The main issue is cost. The exact amount will not be known until
bids have been received, but the current estimate has a shortfall
of $200,000 from the Council's proposed budget. Discussions should
include direction on where to cut costs.

Mr. Greg Tung, Tung and Bottomly, reviewed the staff report
and presented pictures of the recommended materials. Mr. Tung
suggested that bidders lay out 10' x 10' sections at the
corporation yard so that the Council and Commission can view better
the differences in material and colors in natural light.

He then discussed the options for the area in front of the
museum. Ms. Mahern questioned the use of lawn up to the curb due
to the difficulty of walking across grass. Ms. Mohr suggested
using the same pavement treatment to the parking lanes.

11/3/92
- 1 -
