When encountered
with repeated bureaucratic delays, creative problem-solving and innovation are stifled. Good ideas die a
strangled death before ever reaching the possibility of enactment. To the general public, it might appear
that the Civics Arts Commission does little. The truth of the matter it is entangled in a four-layer gauntlet
under the Library and Recreation Department umbrella. I personally have been told, "Civics Arts is only a
small part of my job".
Looking at the proposed Pleasanton Commission and Committer Reporting Structure, I concur it is one of six.
It is not a small part of Pleasanton's community face. The Arts are an impactful dimension in defining a
city.
It is a form of communication to the public-heralding Pleasanton's past and celebrating its vision for the future.
Pleasanton's 2014 Cultural Plan lists nine Goals and Strategies including "improve marketing and
visibility of the arts..." to leverage the economic impact of the arts in terms of tourism
promotion and businesses. Building an image of the past and projecting a vision for the future is
an important part of creating the vitality of Pleasanton. Civics Arts should not be relegated to "a
small part of a job". It is an overwhelmingly important part of creating the Pleasanton
community.
1
