1
THE CITY OF IN
°,°H° .1..1 CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
PLEASANTON,
November 2, 2021
City Council
TITLE: PROCLAIM NOVEMBER 14-20,2021, AS UNITED AGAINST HATE
WEEK IN PLEASANTON
SUMMARY
The Council is presented for its consideration a proclamation declaring November 14-20,
2021, as United Against Hate Week in Pleasanton.
RECOMMENDATION
Adopt the attached proclamation declaring November 14-20, 2021, as United Against
Hate Week in Pleasanton.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
There is no financial impact with adoption of this proclamation.
BACKGROUND
United Against Hate Week emerged from a United Against Hate poster campaign
created by Bay Area cities in response to white supremacist rallies in Berkeley and San
Francisco in 2017. Convened by Not in Our Town, a national anti -hate organization, Bay
Area cities committed to an annual week of action and awareness, which is now
referred to as United Against Hate Week. Participation has since spread to more than
60 cities across the United States. In 2021, Bay Area cities will continue to participate in
United Against Hate Week, from November 14-20. Mayors throughout Alameda County
were contacted to ask that each city council consider offering its support for United
Against Hate Week and assist in raising awareness.
DISCUSSION
The dangers of hate, racism and bigotry have increasingly become part of public dialogue
as incidents of bias and hate crimes have risen across the country in recent years. The
Pleasanton City Council believes it important to join other Bay Area cities in support of
United Against Hate Week to put a stop to the hate and biases that represent a threat to
the safety and civility of Bay Area neighborhoods, towns, and cities. This proclamation
affirms the City of Pleasanton's support for United Against Hate Week and its commitment
to bridging divisions and embracing inclusion and equity in our community.
Subm' to nd Approved by:
Nelson Fialho
City Manager
Attachment:
1.
