Below is a
summary of the comments from the meeting:
Maintenance
1. City staff summarized the research process and results of the research conducted to determine the
level of maintenance required for the various court surfacing options. The memo included review
of 13 different bocce facilities (primarily public facilities — refer to the' memo for more
information) and six surfacing options. The memo ranked the surfacing options from most
maintenance intensive to least maintenance intensive. The order is as follows:
a. Synthetic Turf (< 1/2 hr per court per week, replacement every 8-10 years)
b. Resin (< 1/2 hr per court per week, replacement every 5-7 years)
c. EPDM (1/2 hr per court per week, replacement every 8-10 years)
d. Boccemon (2.5 hr per court per week, 4 hrs per court before each season)
e. Oyster shell and flour with DG (2.5 hrs per court per week, 4 hrs per court before each season)
f. Oyster shell and flour (5 per. court per week, 4+ hrs per court before each season)
2. The City stated that, of the facilities studied as part of the maintenance survey, the majority of the
facilities with an oyster shell/flour blend had a dedicated and experienced maintenance person or
crew that was primarily funded by the bocce league fees.
3. The Committee expressed concern that the order of court surface preference for maintenance
reasons was opposite of the court surface preference for playability reasons.
4. The Committee indicated they hoped that the City would not make the decision to specify a bocce
ball court surface based on maintenance needs over public input.
5. The Committee.pointed out that the maintenance requirements for the. boccemon surfacing (2.5
hours per court per week) was only slightly more than the current maintenance practices for the
existing courts at Centennial Park (2 hours per court per. week).
1
