6.:The Committee asked whether the City was recommending the installation of synthetic turf even
though it was one. of the least preferred. options for court surfacing. Staff responded that the
decision on the type of surfacing would be based on the recommendation of the Parks and -
Recreation Commission at the May 9th meeting (the City has since determined that staff would
include a recommendation to the Parks and Recreation Commission with maintenance
requirements as the primary driver for the type of surfacing).
7. The Committee expressed a willingness to pay more for participation (league fees) in order to fund
maintenance. of one of the oyster shell'and flour blends (with boccemon as the preferred blend).
Based on the discussions with other bocce leagues the fee ranges.from $200-400 per team per
season while the fee in Pleasanton is only $110 per team per season.
8. ,The Committee stated that the synthetic turf courts at Bothwell Parkin Livermore (one of the
facilities reviewed for the maintenancememo) are terrible. The turf gets rutted and the polino and
bocce balls don't roll straight/consistently. The Committee stated that they prefer to play at the
existing Centennial Park bocce ball courts rather than the Bothwell Park courts.
9. The Committee stated that they thought that the courts already play a lot better now that. the City
has provided.a different type of oyster shell flour, as recommended by one :of .the bocce player, for .
bocce ball.
10. The Committee stated that they thought most of the problems with the existing courts would .be
addressed if the drainage was fixed and the proper oyster shell and flour mix was used.
11. A member of the Committee asked what color the courts would be if they were synthetic turf —
Staff indicated that would be determined during the construction document process, but synthetic
turf comes in multiple color options..
12. A member of the Committee asked which of the oyster shell/flour blends drained the best - Staff
indicated based on the survey of facility managers, the boccemon drains slightly better than the
oyster shell/flour blend or the oyster shell/flour with decomposed granite blend because boccemon
is pre -mixed and therefore more consistent.
13. A member of the Committee asked whether the Danville and other courts included in the survey
were open year-round - Staff. indicated most of the facilities in the survey were -open year-round,
although all re closed during inclement weather.
14. The Committee expressed concerns that the synthetic turf would have to be replaced every 8-10
years; which is an additional cost, while the oyster shell/flour blends won't have to replaced, just
replenished on a regular basis.
15. One member of the drop-in bocce ball players also does minor court maintenance, primarily
dragging and leveling the courts.
.16. One of the. Committee members stated that a 2:1 blend of oysterflour to shell is ideal.
-17. Based on the survey results, the oyster shell and flour blend takes sometime before it has been
used enough to get to the -ideal compaction for playing bocce ball.
.18. One of the Committee members stated that the bocce ball'court surfacing at Castlewood Country
Club, which is EPDM, needs to be resurfaced every.2 years at a cost of about $5,000.,
2
