THE CITY OF AGENDA REPORT 4 <br /> o <br /> __, ,� CITY COUNCIL AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES yea`is <br /> pL£ASANTONC JOINT MEETING Q T <br /> if <br /> PLEASANTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT <br /> April 23, 2018 <br /> TITLE: 2018 YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT DAY— SUMMARY AND EVALUATIONS <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> Receive information regarding the 2018 Youth in Government Day held on March 27, <br /> 2018. <br /> SUMMARY <br /> The Youth in Government Committee would like to provide the Pleasanton City Council <br /> and the Pleasanton Unified School District (PUSD) Board of Trustees with an overview of <br /> the 2018 Youth in Government Day. <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> The Youth in Government Day was held on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, as a joint venture <br /> between the City of Pleasanton and the Pleasanton Unified School District. The event was <br /> organized by the Youth in Government Day Committee, which included: Elise Allari (Youth <br /> Commission/Amador HS); Avni Patel (Youth Commission/Foothill HS); Jonathan Pearce <br /> (Youth Commission/Amador HS); Kate Inman (Youth Commission/Amador HS); Beth <br /> Cutter (PUSD), and Joelle Glushenko (City/Community Services). This year 65 students <br /> participated in the event. <br /> The morning program was held at the Firehouse Arts Center, beginning with networking <br /> and a light breakfast provided by Foothill High School Catering. Welcoming remarks were <br /> provided by Mayor Jerry Thorne, PUSD Superintendent David Haglund, and City Manager <br /> Nelson Fialho, who all spoke about their experiences in local government and leadership. <br /> Students were then paired with employees throughout PUSD and the City of Pleasanton. <br /> Students shadowed these employees during the morning session from 9:20-11:30 a.m. <br /> During this shadowing session, students learned about career paths and were exposed to <br /> many aspects of City and PUSD jobs. Students and staff arrived at the Veterans Memorial <br /> Building for the networking lunch provided by Village High School Catering. This year, <br /> Assemblywoman Catherine Baker joined the event as a keynote speaker, sharing her <br /> journey into government leadership and answering questions. <br />
