Following lunch, students joined staff for a second job shadow session from 12:25-2:45
p.m. The day's event concluded with a presentation by Elise Allari, Jonathan Pearce, Kate
Inman and Avni Patel about leadership opportunities available to high school students in
local government and the community.
DISCUSSION
Of the 65 students and roughly 45 staff members in attendance, we received 34
evaluations and 12 evaluations, respectively. Participants were asked the following
questions:
• What were one or two things you enjoyed about Youth in Government Day?
• What are one or two things that you would change or improve for Youth in
Government Day?
• Please share any other comments, feedback, or suggestions.
The feedback was positive, specifically in regards to the opportunity to observe or
participate in real job tasks and see aspects of the City that were previously unknown.
Some of the student feedback included:
• This was a great opportunity for the kids and the future of Pleasanton! Thank you so
much for the event!
• Awesome catering and learning lots of new things I never knew about Pleasanton
and some jobs in general.
• I would make it so that the job shadows can actually shadow the department's job
rather than just listen and talk to them about what they do.
• I really loved seeing the different kinds of jobs that people do to make Pleasanton a
great place. I never knew that so much planning went into designing and building
things like fire stations and parks and all of the behind the scene things that I was
able to see on this trip were amazing!
Some of the staff feedback included:
• I really like interacting with the students and having time to show them what we do
as an organization.
• The challenge remains trying to figure out a way to not have the large number of
students dropping out at the last minute.
• It is nice to be able to be part of shaping someone's outlook on what public service
actually is and how personally rewarding it can be.
In the committee review, along with student and staff comments, the following
recommendations are being made for the event in the future:
• We will improve our promotion to include more information prior to opening the
application period, possibly including an advertising video.
• The keynote speaker was well received and this is something we will try to continue,
making sure to include it on the agenda and advertising.
• We are considering shortening the job shadow durations to add more time to the
networking lunch.
