THE CITY OF m ao
railte AG ENDA REPORT 5
CITY COUNCIL AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES JI Y
pLEASANTON. JOINT MEETING
PLEASANTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
March 22, 2010
TITLE: PLEASANTON YOUTH MASTER PLAN UPDATE
RECOMMENDATION
The City Council and Board of Trustees receive a presentation from staff on the Youth
Master Plan update, discuss the content and provide comments to staff as necessary.
SUMMARY
This report summarizes the accomplishments of the Youth Master Plan Implementation
Committee as it relates to the Pleasanton Youth Master Plan update project. The report
also provides information about the project status and the upcoming steps that are
planned to complete the Pleasanton Youth Master Plan II.
BACKGROUND
The Youth Master Plan of Pleasanton (Master Plan) was originally approved on June 4,
1998 during a joint City Council and Board of Trustees meeting. The Master Plan is the
result of grassroots effort led by the Pleasanton Youth Collaborative (PYC), a group
comprised of community members including former School Board Trustee and current
City Council member Cindy McGovern. Upon adoption of the Master Plan, the PYC
transitioned to become the Youth Master Plan Implementation Committee (YMPIC).
Over the course of the past 12 years the YMPIC worked to implement the Youth Master
Plan strategies. Some notable accomplishments from this plan include the creation of
the website P -town 411, the BMX Park and several city grants issued to local non-
profits that provide programs or services that support the Master Plan strategies.
DISCUSSION
Over the past two years, the YMPIC conducted and completed an audit of the Youth
Master Plan. In late 2008 the YMPIC agreed to pursue a Youth Master Plan Update.
The early steps of this project included small group discussions with the YMPIC
regarding the method and steps necessary to accomplish a successful update. The
input received was used to develop an outreach process that included contracting the
services of MIG, Inc. and the formation of the YMPIC Ad Hoc Committee to steer the
project.
