THE CITY OF 1
CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT
pL£ASANTON-
January 19, 2010
Police Department
TITLE: APPROVAL OF RECOMMENDATIONS FOR USE OF CITIZENS' OPTIONS
FOR PUBLIC SAFETY PROGRAM (COPS) YEAR 13 APPROPRIATION
SUMMARY
State Assembly Bill 3229 of July 12 1996 established the Citizens' Options for Public
Safety (COPS) funding program. These funds, typically approximately $100,000
annually, are allocated from the State Budget and distributed to local law enforcement to
support line level law enforcement functions. This past year, Governor Schwarzenegger
renewed funding for COPS Year 13.
The Council must approve the expenditure of COPS funding. The appropriations must
support front line municipal law enforcement services, cannot supplant existing funding,
and must be separate and apart from other funds.
RECOMMENDATION
City Council hold a public hearing and adopt the attached resolution approving
expenditures from the State of California COPS program funds and approve a FY
2009/10 budget amendment reflecting the identified uses for year 13 appropriation.
FINANCIAL STATEMENT
Through this program the State of California provides supplemental funding to municipal
law enforcement agencies. There is no requirement for matching funds.
