LLNL TECHNICAL VOLUNTEER SERVICE
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
P. O. Box 808, L-700 - Livermore, California

Candace Simonen~ Coordinator
(415) 423-4902

94550

Purpose

The LLNL Technical Volunteer Service (TVS) is designed to
provide technical assistance to state and local governments and
non-profit organizations through the technical expertise of
Laboratory employees. The program is one project of LLNL's Office
of Research and Technology Applications responding to the
requirements of the Stevenson-Wydler Act.

Process

Questionnaires requestinE the volunteerinE of professional
skills and knowledEe~ as well as hobby interests, were sent to all
active and retired employees of LLNL. The returned questionnaires
were entered on a word processor to allow for quick searches for
needed skills.

Although the program will not be advertised to potential users
until the data base is organized and procedures for interviewing,
selecting and training volunteers have been established, we have
already had 23 requests for volunteers. Eleven of these have been
filled - 3 with retirees and 8 with current employees. Skills made
available included mechanical engineering, acoustics, architectures
statistics~ mathematics and computer programming. We were unable to
fill six requests due to the very short time limits of those
requesting helps unavailability of skill requested, or inappropriate
nature of the request. The remaining requests we expect to fill
SOOn.

During the pilot period~ we intend to focus on requests from
the Livermore area. As our capabilities warrant we will expand the
service area.
