Mr. Cody acknowledged the need for data on first responder vehicles and explained that they are
exploring the use of data as it pertains to white area network and the capability to transmit data
through commercial networks. That technology however, is different than what is being used for the
P25 project.
Mayor Hosterman explained that the program is targeted at providing first responders throughout
Alameda and Contra Costa Counties with the ability to communicate with one another on an
emergency and day today basis. She cited an example where a subject led authorities in a pursuit
that began in San Ramon, ended in Pleasanton, and ultimately involved seven agencies, none of
whom could communicate with one another. She said there are plans to grow and extend the areas
of coverage throughout the entire Bay Area and beyond.
Councilmember McGovern said the East Bay Regional Communications System Authority has
recognized the need for buses in emergency situations and asked LAVTA to join. She explained
that the board is interested in doing so but has not yet reached a decision, and suggested that it
may help considerably if they could purchase the radios at a volume price through this program.
Mayor Hosterman noted there were no public speakers.
MOTION: It was M/S Cook-Kallio/McGovern to approve a Memorandum of Understanding between
the City of Pleasanton and Alameda County Fire Department to purchase radio communications
equipment on behalf of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. Motion passed by the following
vote:
Ayes: Councilmembers Cook-Kallio, McGovern, Sullivan, Thorne, Mayor Hosterman
Noes: None
Absent: None
MATTERS INITIATED BY COUNCIL
Councilmember McGovern shared the difficulties of the recent LAVTA meeting where dwindling
state funds have forced them to cut services in excess of $1.5 million in addition to fare increases.
Changes are expected to occur in June 2009.
Mayor Hosterman followed up with Councilmember Thorne to ensure that Pleasanton has applied
far the funding available only to LAVTA and Alameda County Transit.
COUNCIL REPORTS -None
ADJOURNMENT: There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:33 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Karen Diaz
City Clerk
City Council Minutes Page S of 8 March 3, 2009
