Approved and authorized the City Manager to execute a 3-year contract with Mission Valley <br />Sports Officials, Inc. in an amount not to exceed $366,000 for adult softball umpires <br />Motion: It was m/s by Cook-Kallio/McGovern to approve Consent Calendar as submitted. Motion <br />passed by the following vote: <br />AYES: Councilmembers Cook-Kallio, McGovern, Sullivan, Mayor Hosterman <br />NOES: None <br />ABSENT: Councilmember Thorne <br />MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br />10. Public Comment <br />Steve Dowding read into the record the names of the 5 soldiers most recently killed in Iraq and <br />invited the public to join Pleasantonians for Peace at its next vigil on April 8. He challenged Council <br />members to find a venue that allows them to remember and respect those who have given their <br />lives for this country and that maintains awareness that the war continues with the lives of over <br />100,000 American men and women currently at stake. <br />Mayor Hosterman said she is grateful to have had the opportunity to be able to do just that. <br />Fred Norman cited the upcoming sixth anniversary of the war in Iraq, wished Pleasanton would take <br />a stance on the issue, and he urged the Council and community to show their support at this <br />Thursday night's vigil starting at 7 p.m. at the Crosses of Lafayette. <br />Joan Johnson expressed her support for Pleasantonians for Peace, said that nearly 300 million <br />citizens sit back complacently while 100,000 Americans risk their lives in defense of this country, <br />and urged a push to keep the focus on this war. <br />Art Tenbrink said he has worked hard to reinforce in his home what is taught in schools, especially <br />the sense of being members of a community that values honesty, integrity, self discipline, respect, <br />personal and civic responsibility, and compassion. He shared his personal conviction that civic <br />service symbolizes the greatest power one individual can wield in today's world. The following day <br />he would leave for Hiroshima to deliver hundreds of origami plants and poems to the peace <br />memorial in honor of all those, dead and living, whose voices rise up for peace. He asked the Town <br />Council to acknowledge this symbolic act of peace in whichever way they deem appropriate. <br />Mayor Hosterman asked Mr. Tenbrink to extend her greetings to Tadatoshi Akiba, Mayor of <br />Hiroshima, should they meet. <br />Councilmember Sullivan thanked tonight's speakers for their continued efforts and assured them <br />that despite appearances, their actions are appreciated and do make a difference. <br />City Council Minutes Page 2 of 5 March 17, 2009 <br />
