Science Fair Support
Library staff work with the District to support the annual "Science Fun Fair" to supply
books useful to students as they conduct their science projects. Additionally, we
provide a booklet with information on how to research science fair topics using Library
resources online and in person. The Library also provides ascience-related program
during the science fair preparation period for interested elementary students.
School Textbooks
The District provides textbooks to the public library for use by students after school.
Both students and their parents heavily use them during the time they spend at the
Library.
High School Credit Programs
The Library sponsors numerous history, music, literature and science programs for
teens and adults which are offered to local teachers as potential extra credit sources for
their students. The programs include author talks, experiments, film discussions and
theater or music performances.
Rides to School
This traffic-calming program began many years ago as a partnership to combat peak-
hour traffic in Pleasanton. The City partnered with the District to promote the use of
commute alternatives, including carpooling, walking, biking and using public
transportation to and from school.
Currently, the program includes:
A web-based pooling program;
A joint City-School District-Wheels school transportation mailing which
promotes walking, biking, carpooling and public transportation (bus for middle
and high schools only):
Drop-off/pick-up procedures fliers to schools;
Suggested routes to school maps for each elementary school;
Safety valet program (year-round with Valet of the Year recognition at the
first June City Council meeting);
Walk-to-school days at elementary schools in the fall;
r Bike-to-school week promotion at middle schools in spring; and
Programs to promote riding public transportation, carpooling, walking or biking
to school as necessary, i.e., the Walk 'n' Roll to School Campaign.
The City manages and administers the majority of the program elements. Also, we
provide materials and refreshments for events such as the walk to school day and safety
valet incentive parties. The District's role is to assist in promoting the program at the
District level. At the individual schools, school administrators work directly with our staff
to implement the safety valet program (elementary schools), distribute materials and
promote the walk and bike programs.
Page 7 of 8
