Background

The Pleasanton Semor Program Advisory Committee was created in 1993 with the completion of the
Semor Center. The Committee is a representative group of adults interested in the concerns, issues,
interests and needs of Pleasanton Seniors. Members serve as an advisory body to the Human Services
Commission.

The Semor Center has been in operation for six (6) years. It serves as an umbrella facility for over 20
agencies that implement monthly, weekly and quarterly services/programs. The Pleasanton Department
of parks and Community Services provides direct senior programming of weekly activities and seasonal
special events. The Pleasanton Paratransit service is also housed at the center.

The community's aging population continues to grow and diversify. The fastest growing age group in
America today is the population over 85 years of age. The Senior Center is currently serving individuals
whose age ranges over a 50 year span. Each 20 years represents a different life perspective and generation
of interests/needs. As the community continues to grow, cultural diversity also will begin to influence
individual interests and needs.

The Advisory Committee determined that a Strategic Plan needed to be developed to assist staff in
projecting program growth and needs over the next 10 to 15 years. This plan will assist the community in
planning to meet the changing/growing demands for senior services, programs and activities.

The Pleasanton Senior Program Strategic Plan is reflective of the community's needs and priorities for
senior programs/activities/services. Through the development of the Plan, the focus was to identify
commumty concerns/interest, future trends/needs, and fadlity/resource allocation to help provide a
planning blueprint to plan for the next 10-1S years.
