Page 2

ALTERNATIVE #1 (CONTINUED)

This estimate is considered by staff to be the best alternative. An eight
foot perimeter fence, four access gates, a 12' wide decomposed granite or
similar material warning track, and a two foot mowing strip is needed in the
project. The warning track is included, of course, to improve player safety.
The mowing strip is required to minimize maintenance.

ALTERNATIVE #2 - Reduce warning track in width. This would reduce
the cost approximately $1,800.00 for each foot in
width reduced. The 10-foot track is considered the
best width for safety.

ALTERNATIVE #3 - Use a standard soil/dirt as the warning track. While
this alternative would reduce costs about $10,000.00
it is considered to be a maintenance problem and
would not provide a good change in "feel" when running
toward the fence from the grass fields.

ALTERNATIVE #4 - Concrete mowing strip. The total cost for the project,
fencing, gates, and a 4 foot wide concrete mowing strip
would be $45,000.00. This alternative may be the best
as far as maintenance is concerned but creates a safety
hazard for players.

ALTERNATIVE #5 - Fence only. Total cost-approximately $30,000.00 This
alternative would require a maintenance program to either
spray grass near the fence to inhibit growth or
hand trim those areas where mowers cannot reach. The Players
would not have any warning when approaching fence while
playing. This alternative is attractive as it would
allow a proper warning track to be developed later.

Funds are avilable in the Park Three Year Capital Improvement Program to fund
the project at this time. A budget amendment is required to proceed with the
project.

Attachment: Parks Three Year Capital Improvement Program - 1984-85 through 1986-87
Phase IV Master Plan - Pleasanton Recreation g Sports Park

FCB/db
