10 <br />THE CITY OF <br />' CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT <br />j~L~~Sl~NTONa <br />January 20, 2009 <br />Parks & Community Services <br />TITLE: APPROVAL TO PURCHASE THE PAINTING "ONE DAY IN MAY" BY <br />ARTIST JIMMY LU <br />SUMMARY <br />On June 2, 2008, the selection committee for the Civic Arts Commission Award for <br />Artistic Excellence chose "One Day in May," the work of Orinda Artist Jimmy Lu, as one <br />of its award recipients for 2008. This made the painting eligible for purchase under the <br />City's Fine Arts Lease/Purchase Program. Public input regarding the acquisition of the <br />painting has been highly favorable. The Civic Arts Commission, at its December 1, <br />2008 meeting, voted unanimously to recommend purchase of the painting for $2,000. <br />Funds are available in the City's Public Arts Acquisition Fund. <br />CIVIC ARTS COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION <br />That the City Council approve the purchase of the painting "One Day in May" for the <br />City's fine art collection at a cost of $2,000. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Staff concurs with the recommendation of the Civic Arts Commission. <br />FINANCIAL STATEMENT <br />Purchase price of the painting is $2,000, and funds are available in the City's Public Art <br />Acquisition Fund. Two (2) lease payments totaling $400 have been made, leaving a <br />balance of $1,600. <br />
