BACKGROUND
The 40 Developmental Assets are positive experiences, relationships, opportunities,
and personal qualities that young people need to grow up healthy, caring and
responsible. Created in 1990 by the Search Institute, the framework is grounded in
research on child and adolescent development, risk prevention and resiliency.
These fundamental building blocks for healthy youth and healthy community are
arranged into eight (8) categories: Support, Empowerment, Boundaries Expectations,
Constructive Use of Time, and Commitment to Learning, Positive Values, Social
Competencies, and Positive Identity.
Research shows that the more assets young people have, the less likely they are to
engage in risky behaviors. The common themes about the importance of assets have
emerged from numerous findings:
Assets promote academic success.
• Assets divert youth from risky behaviors and increase civic engagement.
• Assets give young people the strengths they need to make positive choices in
life.
• Across the world in big cities and in small towns, most young people now
experience fewer than half of the 40 Developmental Assets.
DISCUSSION
The 40 Developmental Assets Task Force's mission is to integrate the Search Institute's
40 Developmental Assets into the schools and community through meeting the Districts'
Strategic Planning Committee goals and the City's Youth Master Plan goals.
Currently, Pleasanton youth and adults can become involved in the "Got Assets? Youth
and Adults United For A Healthy Community Initiative" by either becoming involved in
the Task Force, Club 40, Summer Youth Summits, the YMCA's Leadership Academy,
and/or the City of Pleasanton's Youth in Government Day.
Assets are easy to build! Asset building is about relationships. As a community, we
can make a difference and help young people succeed.
Submitted by:
Fiscal Review:
Approv by:
Nelson Fialho
City Manager
/ ,J/~~Y/ ~f~ ~/~~ °_ ~A ~--~Q. cam`
Susan Andrade-Wax David P.
