BACKGROUND
In the year 2000, Alameda County voters approved Measure B, the %: cent sales tax to
fund transportation improvement projects. The Alameda County Transportation
Improvement Authority, (ACTIA) oversees the implementation of projects funded by
Measure B. The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is a nonprofit organization working
with communities to preserve unused rail corridors by transforming them into trails.
In 2007, ACTIA joined the RTC in the national Active Transportation campaign. The
goal of this campaign is to increase funding for walking and bicycling in the next federal
transportation bill, specifically to provide $50 million to each of 40 communities for
bicycling and walking projects. ACTIA has requested that local jurisdictions within
Alameda County show support for this campaign by adopting a resolution endorsing the
Active Transportation campaign.
The goals of the Active Transportation campaign are to increase pedestrian and bicycle
access to transit, fill the gaps in the inter-jurisdictional trails such as the Iron Horse Trail,
develop trails that connect communities such as the new East Bay Greenway, and
develop programs to encourage walking and biking.
DISCUSSION
By adopting a resolution that supports the Active Transportation campaign, Pleasanton
will be helping to increase the probability of obtaining federal funding for the Alameda
County active transportation projects. One of the specific goals mentioned in the Case
Statement for the Active Transportation Campaign is the completion of the Iron Horse
Trail from the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station to Livermore.
Submitted by:
~~--' /~~
Brian Dolan
Director of
Community Development
Fiscal Review:
~~~
David P.
