Arbortst Report, Augustine St.
Assumptions 8~ Limitations
December 6, 2007
This report was based on a tentative map dated November 19, 2007, by Debolt Civil
Engineering, and it was assumed that the existing trees and homes were accurately
located
Tree Inventory /Potential Impacts
Tree #1: Carya illinoensis. "Pecan"
This tree has a trunk diameter of 18", or 58" in circumference measured at 4.5' above
grade. Based on its circumference, the tree qualifies as a "Heritage Tree". The tree is in
good health, and has a reasonably good structure. The canopy spread extends
approximately 18' to the south, 20' to the east, 25' to the north, and 20' to the west.
Other than one wound on the north side, 20' up the trunk, where a large branch ripped
out several years ago, no other structural or heath problems were noticed. Buttress
roots were observed to be shallow, extending above grade in the first 3' out from the
trunk.
The tentative map indicates encroachments will occur within the dripline on three sides
of the tree. The access lane will be constructed 3' from the base of the tree to the
south, with iwo new driveways, one for lot 2 being 3' from the trunk to the west, and one
for the new residence on lot 3 to be 10' to the east. Encroachments are likely to affect
and potentially remove up to 60-70% of the root system. Given the extent of
encroachment, the shallow rooting, and its moderate resiliency to construction impacts
(Trees & Development, Mafheny & Clark), it is my opinion that this tree is unlikely to
survive the encroachments.
Tree #2 Pyrus ca/leryana. "Gallery Pear"
This tree has a trunk diameter of 7.5" or 23" in circumference, with a dripline radius of
approximately 8'. This tree is not a heritage tree. The tree is in good health, and has a
good structure.
The pear is located within a cutout in the city sidewalk. The tentative map indicates a
new driveway for the existing residence on lot 5 to be installed 7' from the base of the
tree. Despite the encroachment, and the species poor tolerance to root pruning (Trees
& Development, Matheny & Clark), it is my opinion that the impacts will be limited to a
small portion of the root system, and given the young age of the tree t will be more
resilient and not likely to be impacted.
Tree #3 Juglans n~ia. "English Walnut"
This tree has a trunk diameter of 9" or 28" in circumference, and a canopy radius of 7'.
This is not a heritage tree. The tree is in poor health, having very stunted growth, and a
Page 2 of 4
