/" City P/easanton

REPORT

AUgUSt 20, 1985
HONORABLE CITY COUNCIL
Pleasanton, California

Proposed resolution authorizing PG & E to convert city owned street liqht~
to High Pressure Sodium.

Members of the Council:

Background

As your council is aware, some time ago PG & E went through the City and
converted all street lights on the LS-1 rate schedule from mercury vapor to
the more efficient high pressure sodium bulbs. The LS-1 rate schedule in-
cluded all city street lights except those at signalized intersections.
With the exception of the downtown area, most of the city's traffic signals
are new enough that the light~ were installed with the more efficient
bulbs.

The New Program

PG & E has now introduced a new program to convert the remaining mercury
vapor street lights at signalized intersections to high pressure sodium.
According to the literature published by PG & E, the relamping will cost
approximately $122.00 per light. Of this amount, PG & E will pick up the
first $72.00, leaving a cost to the City of $50.00. Nine of the existing
street lights in this category qualify for this new program. All others
have been previously converted. Since the high pressure sodium lights are
more efficient than the old mercury vapor lights, a lower wattage bulb can
be used to produce the same light output. The reduced cost of this lower
wattage bulb yields a monthly saving of $6.45 per light. At this rate the
City would be able to recover their investment within an eight month period
from the time of relamping. The location of the lights are as follows:

1. N/E corner of First Street and Neal Street
2. N/W corner of First Street and Neal Street
3. S/E corner of First Street and Neal Street
4. S/W corner of First Street and Neal Street

5. S/W corner of First Street and Stanley Boulevard

6. N/W corner of First Street and Ray Street
7. S/W corner of First Street and Vineyard Avenue

SR 85:384
