3217 Arbolado, Camphor Assessment, & Appraisal
large vertical (14" X 4") wound on the west side of the trunk.
The walnut is located in a 4' X 8' cutout of the city sidewalk. Removal of existing curb
and gutter, and the re-construction of a new driveway approach will occur 11' east of
the trunk (4' outside the dripline). Although the English Walnut has poor tolerance to
root encroachment (Trees & Development, Matheny & Clark) the encroachment should
be minor and not effect tree health. However, it is my opinion that this would be a good
time to improve soil conditions and replace the tree with a more suitable species (crepe
myrtle, hedge maple, Chinese pistache).
Recommendations
• Unless the driveway to the west, and the lane to the south can be pulled back an
additional 10' from the trunk of the pecan, this tree will have to be removed.
• Leave existing handscape around pear to protect roots from construction activities.
• Apply a 3~" layer of mulch over the accessible root zone area of the pear to prevent
soil compaction, and cleanly prune any roots that may be encountered during the
grading for the new driveway. .
• Irrigate pear every 2-3 weeks to a depth of 10" throughout construction.
• I recommend removing the English Walnut (#3), and replacing with a suitable
sidewalk tree.
APPRAISED VALUES
The following appraisals were arrived at using the Trunk Fom-ula Method. This method
is used for larger trees that can not be readily replaced by equal sized specimens.
The figures below were calculated using worksheets formatted from the 9"' Edition of
the Guide for Plant Appraisal written by the Council OF Tree & Landscape Appraisers,
and the Species Classification and Group Assignment Guide written by the Western
Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture.
