SYiVCHRO Hexagon staff has used traffic simulation to answer all of these questions and more. Hexagon's
clients have received these results with satisfaction and assurance that the traffic simulation animation is an
ideal tool for conveying both the problem and the solution to staff and policy-makers alike.
Hexagon Transportation Operations Analysis Project Examples
Santana Row
San Jose, California
Hexagon staff was hired by Federal Realty Investment Trust, aMaryland-based developer interested in
redeveloping the Town & Country shopping center on Stevens Creek Boulevard. The existing center had
been underutilized for several years and was in need of modification or replacement. Federal proposed an
entirely fresh concept of an urban village center with ground floor retail stores and medium density
residential units above. Two small hotels were also included in the concept and all parking would be
accommodated in hidden parking structures. The concept raised several traffic concerns among neighbors
and city officials. Hexagon staff completed a very thorough traffic study that not only satisfied the standard
requirements but also included several other operational issues that were important to reviewing agencies.
Several traffic mitigation measures were recommended including added turn lanes at intersections and
additional lanes at the adjacent I-880/Stevens Creek interchange. The project and mitigation measures were
ultimately approved by the San Jose City Council.
~ Randy Paul, Project Manager
~ Federal Realty Investment Trust
.., .. The
purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of roadway improvements proposed to mitigate the
~ impacts of planned development in the Edenvale Industrial Area. The traffic operations analysis was
conducted using the microscopic simulation software, TRAF-CORSIM. CORSIM simulates the movements of
~ individual vehicles through an integrated network of surface streets, freeway ramps and mainline segments.
= Because of the microscopic level of detail, CORSIM accurately models a driver's lane preference based on its
~~
~_.:~_ ~'_'1
,,
,,
