THE CITY OF <br />CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT <br />['L£~S~4NTONo <br />September 16, 2008 <br />City Manager <br />TITLE: ADOPT A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING A COMMUNITY <br />ORGANIZATION IN PLEASANTON TO BE FORMED BY SENTINELS <br />OF FREEDOM <br />SUMMARY <br />Sentinels of Freedom is anon-profit organization founded in 2004 after a father of three <br />Army Rangers, Mike Conklin, of Danville, California, was inspired to reach out to <br />severely injured veterans after one of his sons was injured in Iraq in 2003. This <br />grassroots organization promises to accept responsibility for the well-being of severely <br />injured men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who are returning to civilian life and <br />show promise for bright and productive futures. It affords them the time to adapt to their <br />new physical challenges and surroundings, and ease back into a life of complete self- <br />sufficiency. <br />Sentinels of Freedom is committed to helping communities across the United States <br />support as many of these men and women as possible. Through community based <br />volunteer teams programs such as, "Welcome Home" ceremonies and the Sentinels of <br />Freedom Scholarship program are coordinated. The Scholarship program was created <br />to benefit qualified members of the U.S. Armed Forces who were severely injured in the <br />line of duty on or after September 11, 2001. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Adopt a resolution supporting the Sentinels of Freedom. <br />FINANCIAL STATEMENT <br />There is no financial impact to the City associated with this action <br />
