Motion: It was m/s by Cook-Kallio/Thorne to approve Consent Calendar Items as submitted and <br />as noted. Motion passed by the following vote: <br />Ayes: Councilmembers Cook-Kallio, <br />Noes: None <br />Absent: None <br />McGovern, Sullivan, Thorne, Mayor Hosterman <br />MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br />19. Public Comment <br />Fred Norman said since his vacation in Italy, 27 military soldiers have been killed in Iraq, said no <br />mention was made in Italy of the news nor did he find a single reference in the local papers <br />when he returned, and he asked the Council to attend the next vigil on June 11 at 7:00 p.m. <br />Steve Dowding said at the last Council meeting a Proclamation declaring May 26'" as <br />Community of Character Week was adopted, questioned how the City was acting morally and <br />ethically as the stewards of the nation, and he read the names of 10 soldiers who recently died. <br />Carole Perkins urged the Council to take a stand on the deceptive Prop 98 on the June ballot, <br />said its passage will eliminate rent control in California, and asked voters to vote yes on Prop <br />99. <br />Councilmember Sullivan confirmed with the City Attorney that if the Council did want to pass a <br />resolution regarding Prop 98 and 99, the Council would need to make a finding that the matter <br />arose after the agenda was posted, that action needed to be taken prior to the next council <br />meeting, with a 4/5 vote and supported it be agendized as an emergency item. Council <br />concurred with add an item to the agenda. <br />Sharon Ward said renters need the Council's support of Prop 99, said many seniors do not want <br />to become homeless and hoped the Council will take a stand on the issue and asked voters to <br />vote no on Prop 98 and yes on Prop 99. <br />Donna Wilkinson asked the Council to take a stand and help them by voting no on Prop 98 and <br />yes on Prop 99. <br />John Felton spoke in favor of a Quiet Zone in Downtown Pleasanton, believes having the train <br />run through town adds a certain character, use and charm, but was opposed to hearing the loud <br />horn in the middle of the night and gave examples of decibel levels. <br />Kay Ayala asked for a no vote for Prop 98 and yes for Prop 99, requested the City Attorney <br />describe both Propositions, said Prop 98 removes local control on land use, Prop 98 is heavily <br />financed by developers, and she asked for the City to make a stand on the issue. <br />David Ham thanked the Council for re-affirming the adoption of C Company, some of its <br />members are being re-deployed back to Iraq, the medical unit has grown in size from 53 to 85 <br />soldiers, and he hoped that future packages and correspondence could be sent to them. <br />City Council Minutes 4 May 20, 2008 <br />
