The purpose of this report is to establish an informational base in order that council <br />members, school board members, parents, community members, and developers con <br />understand the distfictts position in trying to solve the overcrowding in our classrooms. In <br />order to obtain a proper perspective of the problem, one must review prior events that have <br />led us to the decision which is to be considered. <br /> <br />PARENT CONCERNS <br />In December 198z~, parents of Walnut Grove and Fairlands schools began to address the <br />Board of Education about school classrooms being overcrowded. Parents expressed concerns <br />that children were being bused from their neighborhood schools across town to schools that <br />had space available, and further expressed concerns for the lack of school flexibility for <br />special programs. At subsequent meetings, parents from Harvest Park expressed general <br />safety concerns for the lack of space available at Harvest Park Middle School. The parents' <br />concerns prompted the Board of Education to charge the administration with preparing <br />enrol Iment projections. <br /> <br />CITY HOUSING DATA <br />District administration met with City Planning staff to obtain staff reports that provided <br />housing growth through 1988. This data was obtained from reports the city was using to <br />update the General Plan for the City of Pleasanton. <br /> <br />BI~OLLMENT PROJECTIONS' <br />The district administration obtained city records, neighboring schools' enrollments, county <br />birth rates for the Reasonton area, and five-year history of student attendance records, to <br />form a data bose to provide future enrollment projections. This enrollment report was <br />submitted to the Board of Education on November 6, 1985. The enrollment report projected <br />a sign ificant increase in elementary school enrollment. <br /> <br />SCHOOL RENiODELING <br />To accommodate new students for the 1985-86 school year, the district remodeled its <br />facilities at Alisal, Fairlands, Walnut Crave, and Harvest Park schools. The remodeling was <br />basically portitioning walls and room dividers to provide for additional classrooms. <br /> <br /> -1- <br /> <br /> <br />
