procedures are necessary. Mr. Gralnek asked the Commission to accept the proposal presented, so the
project can move forward to the City Council.
John Gustafson -believes the ice skating facility would be a world-class facility, with four (4) great rinks
and many other amenities. The programming it would provide will be diverse, and daily public sessions
will be offered to varied groups.
Michael Shevelson -referred to the letter sent in by the sports groups. Indicated that between 30-40% of
all Pleasanton students participate in some sports program. Reiterated the need for anall-weather, lighted
field at Upper Bernal, and additional sports fields in Phase II of Bernal Community Park. Mr. Shevelson
recommended the Commission accept the proposal for Staples Ranch, as presented.
Brad Hirst -agreed with the Commission's comments on the need for additional restrooms in the design
plan. He commented on the fact that a community rarely gets an opportunity to develop an area for a
second time, and hoped that the Commission would take advantage of this opportunity. Mr. Hirst liked
the design look of a king-sized neighborhood park, with many great activities that are not necessarily
available in other areas. He commended staff and the project consultants.
Rich Wilcox -commended the plan designers and felt the ice facility would be good for many young
skaters in the Pleasanton area. He urged the Commission to recommend the plan to the City Council, with
the inclusion of a second restroom.
Richard Pugh -Friends of Pleasanton Organization representative -expressed his appreciation that the
community was allowed to be involved in the process. He indicated that the design work has exceeded all
of his expectations, and provided a jump start for a recommendation to the City Council. Mr. Pugh
commented on several items, including: drainage in the dog park area, tennis courts in the northern area,
Arroyo Mocho trail, the central park area, children's play area, and the need for a second restroom. He
acknowledged that Friends of Pleasanton has no position on the proposed ice skating facility, but the
organization does have some concerns with public park land being used for a commercial venture.
Considering funding of the park, the group feels that this could be a good ice facility and a sparse park.
Mr. Pugh also felt the City Council should allow public input on the issue.
Scott Raty, Chamber of Commerce -complimented everyone on the design process for the project. He
advised that Sharks representatives had attended a Chamber luncheon in February 2008, and had
discussed: 1) having no public money spent on the ice facility; 2) offering programs to all public groups;
and 3) working with the School District and the City. Mr. Redding indicated that the Chamber felt that
minimal traffic would be felt by including the Sharks facility in the park, and that a $4M positive impact
and tax revenue could be achieved. He requested that the Commission support the proposal and move the
project forward to the City Council.
Becky Dennis originally had concerns about traffic and regional activities in the park from the ice
facility, but now believes this is something that will be good for the City and allow access to the area for
the community. She liked the proposed meadow area, and wondered if the detention area could be used as
a vernal pond with a strolling area. Ms. Dennis also felt that a water feature in the park made good sense.
She hoped the City would move forward with this great opportunity.
Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes
April 10, 2008
Page 5
