Debbie Look -indicated she was in favor of including the Sharks facility in this community park, and
believes it will be a great addition for youth in the area. Ms. Look indicated that she lives by Sports and
Recreation Community Park, and enjoys all the activities there. She suggested that the Commission
address additional recreational opportunities within Staples Ranch Community Park.
Mark Bissell -advised that he moved to Pleasanton eight (8) months ago and his sons play hockey.
Sports facilities in the area are great, and this plan offers an opportunity for an ice facility that will be a
great contribution to the City.
Debbie Jaeger -discussed the lack of usable area in the water detention area. Ms. Jaeger wondered how
many Pleasanton residents drive to other locations for ice skating, and whether the proposed location was
suited for a regional facility. She was opposed to the lack of park area around the ice facility, and had
concerns about parking and grassy areas; however, she loves the inclusion of another dog park.
Paul Bates -has played ice hockey for 45 years and operated ice hockey business. He commended the
Sharks organization for coming forward with this great opportunity, and supports the proposed design.
Katrina Montesori -advised that 30% of players on her son's hockey team, practicing in Dublin, come
from Pleasanton. Her husband also plays hockey, and must travel to different cities to play. She believes
it would be great to have a place to play in Pleasanton. Ms. Montesori applauds the plan to have an ice
facility in the area.
Valerie Arkin -expressed her concerns about when the park would be developed and where the funds
would come from. She felt that something needed to be given back to the City by the Sharks group for the
public land being provided.
Chairperson Kummer closed the Public hearing at 9:40 pm, and requested a 10-minute break.
Commissioner Ritter expressed concerns about financing for this park project. He felt the design proposal
was great, and including the Sharks facility was a good idea.
Commissioner Kinzer commented on the need for a second restroom facility, whether the ice facility
could be moved to a more viable location, and the Commission's responsibility regarding funding of the
park. Mr. Wolfe indicated that funding requirements will be discussed with the Sharks Group if an ice
facility is included in the Master Plan.
Commissioner Kinzer also advised that he was originally concerned about removing all sports fields from
the design, but was happy to learn that the sports groups were comfortable with that recommendation. He
would recommend support of the proposed design, with the understanding that the park is built at the same
time as the ice facility.
Commissioner Dibiase supported including a second restroom, or being able to use facilities in the Sharks
complex. Mr. Wolfe suggested that staff would need to review sewer capability for a second restroom.
Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes
April 10, 2008
Page 7
