17.3 Extension of Probationary Period <br /> <br /> If a probationary employee is off work due to a leave of <br /> absence, sick leave or disability leave or any <br /> combination thereof for a period exceeding thirty (30) <br /> consecutive calendar days, said employee's probationary. <br /> period shall be extended automatically by the length of <br /> said leave. The probationary period may be extended <br /> once by the Personnel Officer for a period not to exceed <br /> ninety (90) ~ays in order to further evaluate the <br /> performance of the probationary employee. <br /> <br />17.4 Rejection of Probationary Employee - Original <br /> Appointment <br /> <br /> The City Manager may terminate a probationary employee <br /> during the probationary period upon fifteen (15) days <br /> written notice without right of appeal in any manner by <br /> the probationary employee. <br /> <br />17.5 Rejection of Probationary Employee - Promotional <br /> Appointment <br /> <br /> Any employee rejected during the probationary period <br /> following a promotional appointment or at the conclusion <br /> of the probation period shall be reinstated to a <br /> position in the class from which he/she was promoted. <br /> <br />Section 18. Promotion <br /> <br /> Promotional or open-promotional examinations may be <br /> conducted whenever in the opinion of the Personnel <br /> Officer the needs of the service require. Only <br /> employees who meet the requirements set forth in the <br /> examination announcements may compete in promotional <br /> examinations. <br /> <br /> Insofar as consistent with the best interests of the <br /> service all vacancies in the competitive service shall <br /> be filled by promotion from within the competitive <br /> service after a promotional examination has been given <br /> and a promotional list established. <br /> <br /> Upon completion of all promotional testing, the names of <br /> the persons having the highest three (3) scores on the <br /> eligibility list shall be submitted to the department <br /> head for his/her consideration. <br /> <br /> An employee meeting the minimum qualifications may be <br /> temporarily promoted to an authorized position on an <br /> "acting" basis. The employee temporarily promoted shall <br /> be compensated at the pay rate for the position he/she <br /> is filling, until such time as the position is filled on <br /> a permanent basis or he/she returns to his/her previous <br /> position. <br /> <br />Memorandum of Understanding <br />Page 20 <br /> <br /> <br />
