Public Art- Glass Marques
The glass marquees are designed to create a beautiful, visual, attractive beacon for the
facility. The west side marquee will be situated so as to be seen from Main Street via
Division St. and is evocative of the building's historic mission as a firehouse. The east
side marquee announces the entrance to the facility from Lions Wayside Park and
contains colors (greens/blues) that complement the natural setting of the park. The
proposed gift of the glass marquee was approved by the Civic Arts Commission (Dec. 3,
2007), Parks and Recreation Commission (Dec. 6, 2007), and the Firehouse Arts
Center Task Force (Feb. 26, 2008). Renderings of the artworks, indicating their design
and placement on the Firehouse were displayed in the lobby of 200 Old Bernal Avenue
for three weeks from late February, 2008 to early March, 2008. Interested members of
the public were asked to make comments regarding the proposal. Two comment cards
were submitted praising the design. No negative comments were received.
Martin Donlin, artist and designer of the project, resides in England. He has major
pieces of glass art installed in Europe, England and the United States. He was selected
by the donors with assistance from staff, and representatives from the Civic Arts
Commission and Parks and Recreation Commission.
All costs related to the development of the proposed design have been paid for by Mr.
and Mrs. Harrington. The Harrington's will finance the subsequent fabrication and
installation of the marquees once they are accepted by the City.
CONCLUSION
The adaptive reuse of the former Fire Station #1, transforming it into the Firehouse Arts
Center, provides the City with a unique opportunity to once again allow this historic
building to serve the community. In addition to expanding the programs offered at the
Amador Theater, the art gallery and classrooms at the Firehouse will provide a new
venue for visual arts exhibitions and instruction in the arts. Public art, as evidenced by
the glass marquees and signage, is integral to the building and further conveys the
City's commitment to the arts. Those who patronize the arts will also bring economic
growth to Pleasanton's popular downtown area. With the assistance of the Pleasanton
Cultural Arts Foundation, acommunity-based group, the Firehouse becomes a reality
that has been the collective vision of many in Pleasanton.
Submitted by:
Fiscal Review:
Approved y:
Nelson Fialho
City Manager
lie Yuan- 'u David P.
