BACKGROUND
At the March 18, 2008 meeting, the City Council accepted a very generous donation of
$500,000 from the family of Marilyn Murphy Kane to complete the trail on the western
parcel of the Bernal Property. Jim Kane explained how he and his late wife Marilyn
enjoyed walking on the property, particularly near the Arroyo de la Laguna. He noted
how pleased Mrs. Kane was when the City received the Bernal site, and how she
advocated for some type of "walking park" facility there. He also indicated that he and
his three (3) children, Tom, Lisa, and Bruce, expect to contribute an additional
$300,000-$400,000 for the project later this year.
Later in the evening, during the "Matters Initiated by Council" portion of the agenda, the
Council indicated a desire to name the proposed trail on the Bernal Property in honor of
Marilyn Kane or the Kane family, and asked staff to contact the family for its naming
preference. In a follow-up conversation with Mr. Kane, he indicated the family's desire
that the trail be named in memory of "Marilyn Murphy Kane."
DISCUSSION
On April 20, 2004, the City Council approved revisions to the City naming policy for
parks, recreation facilities, and other City-owned public facilities (Resolution 04-019).
Section 5 of the Resolution provides for Naming Related to Donations, providing
discretion to the Council to determine the level of donation required for recognition.
Although a 5-year waiting period after the death of a potential honoree is generally
required for naming apark/facility, the waiting period is not required based on a
donation/financial contribution.
bmitted by:
v
J m s W.
