The report also describes the collaboration between the Pleasanton
Unified School District and the City on the General Plan update and notes the
continuing opportunities for PUSD input.
BACKGROUND
On April 15, 2003, the City Council directed staff to begin preparation of a
comprehensive update of the City's General Plan which had been last updated and
adopted in 1996. It was the City Council's intent to work closely with the Pleasanton
Unified School District (PUSD) during the General Plan update both in terms of sharing
information and seeking input on future development options. Therefore, in addition to
regular communications between City and PUSD staff, General Plan issues have also
been discussed at the City of Pleasanton/PUSD Liaison Committee Meetings, and at
Joint Meetings between the City Council and the PUSD Board.
DISCUSSION
With completion of the Draft Noise and Air Quality Elements of the General Plan, all
thirteen elements have now been drafted and staff is in the process of consolidating and
formatting a Draft General Plan for public review. The Draft General Plan reflects the
Consensus Preferred Land Use Alternative previously discussed with the Pleasanton
Unified School District Board in October 2006. The plan proposes new residential
development in several key locations: adjacent to the new Stoneridge Mall Road BART
station; in Hacienda; senior continuing care units at Staples Ranch; new senior units in
the existing senior community at Kottinger Place/Pleasanton Gardens; new high density
residential units located in scattered sites in the downtown; and residential units as part
of the future East Pleasanton Specific Plan. In October 2006, the Board's motion stated
that the Preferred Plan would best fit the District's needs in terms of providing school
facilities and educational services to Pleasanton.
