The goal of Youth In
Government Day is to stimulate student interest and participation in community
governance, and to assist in understanding the democratic process. This year's event
was held on March 4, 2008, with students representing Amador Valley, Foothill, Village,
and Horizon high schools.
Student applications for Youth in Government Day were distributed to Leadership
classes at the four (4) high schools. Announcements were also placed in the daily
bulletins at each of the schools, with all students required to complete an application.
Students were required to answer the following questions as part of the application
process:
1. Why do you want to participate in Youth in Government Day?
2. What type of position do you hope to job shadow?
On the application, students were asked to rate their top five (5) preferences in the
areas of local government. Potential areas of consideration included elected officials,
administration, public service, site principals, recreation services, etc. Students were
then matched with City or School District personnel based on their expressed
preferences.
Youth in Government Day began with an overview of the day's activities by City
Manager Nelson Fialho, and PUSD Superintendent Dr. John Casey. Students then met
with their individual job shadow partner for three (3) hours to learn more about their
specific job responsibilities. A total of 26 students selected elected City officials and
staff to job shadow, with another 20 students selecting School District personnel.
