BACKGROUND
Construction Status
Construction of the planned improvements at Alviso Adobe Community Park were
initiated in July 2007, and the work is well underway. Tree Line Construction, experts in
adobe structure restoration, has completed its work on the actual Adobe structure. The
contractor has painstakingly brought the adobe structure back to near-original condition,
as it existed in the early 1900's. The firm used original, historically based materials, and
manufactured new adobe bricks from soil and materials on site. JFC Construction,
General Contractor for the project, has begun construction on the other project
amenities, including the milking barn, bunkhouse, entry portal wall, and riparian stream
bridge. City staff has worked to incorporate additional amenities which will further
support the planned interpretive program for the facility. These include movable storage
and historic work wagons, which will serve as learning stations for visiting students.
Timeline
Construction of the entire project is anticipated to be completed by July, 2008, barring
any unforeseen circumstances or weather concerns. A 90-day maintenance period will
ensue, after which the building should be ready for occupancy and program
implementation. It is anticipated that a grand opening event and dedication will occur in
mid-October 2008. School visitations, interpretive activities and special events will
commence soon after.
Grand Opening/Dedication Activities
Working with community groups such as the Audubon Society and Jedediah Smith
Society (re-enactments), preliminary activities in anticipation of the grand opening have
been developed. These could include birding hikes, historic re-enactments, Ohlone
Indian activities, "Planting for the Future", etc. The actual program will be finalized prior
to the grand opening.
Agreement/Contract with the Amador Livermore Historical Society (Museum on
Main Street)
On July 17, 2007, the City Council awarded a contract in the amount of $138,805 to
ALVHS, operator of the Museum on Main Street, for programming and administrative
services associated with Alviso Adobe Community Park. The Scope of Work includes a
collaborative effort between the City and ALVHS staff to develop an annual interpretive
plan for the Adobe, including activities and experiences for visitors to the site. ALVHS
staff will provide expertise in exhibit development, archival and artifact management,
historical interpretation, etc., which City Staff will use to develop and implement
interpretive activities at Alviso Adobe Community Park. This will include programs that
highlight particular historical themes and include coordinated school class visits to both
the Museum on Main Street and the park. ALVHS staff will also promote, coordinate,
and schedule all collaborative school visits, including an initial lecture experience at the
Museum on Main Street, and subsequent visit to the Alviso Adobe. Administrative
services will include: volunteer/docent coordination; publicity assistance, budget
development; and archival.
