BACKGROUND
The primary objective of this project is to develop plans for the replacement of the play
apparatus and necessary site improvements at four (4) City parks - Amaral,
Meadowlark, Tennis and Community, and Valley Trails. The existing equipment is
outdated and requires continual maintenance and expensive repairs. Recent changes
in playground equipment standards by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC) have necessitated the replacement of older, non-conforming apparatus in many
of the City's parks. In addition, requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act
(ADA) will be addressed in the design of necessary site improvements. Paved
walkways, ramps and wheelchair "transfer points" will be added, as needed, to allow
ease of access for disabled persons.
The consultant's work will follow the design direction of the City Landscape Architect
and Parks Maintenance Superintendent, and conform to City Standard Specifications
and Details.
DISCUSSION
Staff identified several firms that specialize in work of this type; however, of all the firms
identified, Tanaka Design Group, Inc. was determined to be the most qualified to design
the project. The Scope of Work proposed by Tanaka Design Group is complete and
comprehensive, and staff believes that the proposed fees are equitable. A copy of the
proposal and the recommended Professional Services Agreement are attached for the
Council's review.
Submitted by:
e~
ames W. e
Director of Parks and
Community Services
Attachment:
1.
