My primary concern from the
beginning has been and continues to be the issue of noise. I have
already been disturbed by the noise and filed an official complaint with
several departments at the city because there was a great deal of
confusion and mis-information about where I should file the complaint.
Additionally I have outstanding unanswered questions which are outlined
below.
Originally I was told by the Beckers that the chickens were to be
temporarily raised and sold at the fair, which is in 2-3 weeks time. If
this is still the case, there is no need to have the hearing, unless
this is no longer true and the chickens will not be sold as originally
stated. If this is the case, what is the ultimate purpose for having
the chickens? I am a strong believer in the current zoning laws and do
not feel that the best place to raise farm animals or poultry is in a
residential area. I moved here to Pleasanton for a certain life style,
one that is compatible and expected with an upscale residential area
such as ours. Certainly farms are a more suitable environment for
poultry and other types of animals (horses, cows, goats, etc.). Isn't
this why the area is currently zoned as residential and not
agricultural? Additionally, I'm concerned that this could negatively
affect my property value.
If granted will the scope of this permit be limited to 4 female chickens
only? Or can the 4 chickens multiply into more chickens? By this I
mean will a rooster be allowed to fertilize the eggs which will again be
very noisy.
If the permit is granted, how long is the conditional permit good for?
What are my options concerning noise then? When last I viewed the
chickens they were in a small open fenced dog pen. If the conditional
permit is granted will the Beckers be required to build a suitable
chicken coop in an effort to cut down on the noise? Who will make sure
that this is done?
If the permit is granted will animal control be required to regularly
inspect the living environment of the chickens to make sure that
sanitary conditions exist for them and the neighboring residents.
Unfortunately, it is a fact of life that chickens are messy and this
type of environment has the potential to draw rodents if not kept very
clean.
Respectfully,
Alana Shoars
2596 Larrikeet Court
Pleasanton, CA 94566
925-485-0965
1
