You had asked for some additional information
regarding the following topics:
1. Number and types of Pleasanton calls
The 2-1-1 statistics for July 1, 2007 through November 30, 2007 indicate that there were a total of 82
Pleasanton calls. Of those, 22 were from unduplicated callers who indicated that:
- 14% were disabled
- 82% were female
- 54% had children under 18 in the home
These callers were given 138 service referrals and 15 housing referrals. The types of services requested
included (by order of most requested):
- Emergency shelter including Domestic Violence Shelters
- Residential facilities (e.g., nursing homes; disability housing)
- Subsidized rental housing
- Housing payment assistance
- Legal aid
- Emergency food
- Utilities financial assistance/connection repair
- Police assistance
- Substance abuse treatment programs
- Child care and after school programs
- Medical applications assistance
- Donation of toys to shelters
When I reviewed Pleasanton statistics I noticed that 23.5% of requests were for emergency shelter. That
may indicate that people looking for shelter know that Eden I&R staff call shelters twice each day and
have bed availability information by calling 2-1-I. Or, it could indicate that there is a significant need in
Pleasanton for emergency shelter.
Nationwide, one of the many benefits of 2-1-1 is its ability to collect data that reflects the needs, and gaps
in services, throughout the community. Another major benefit is its critical role during and after disasters.
Just recently Eden I&R dispatched two 2-1-I Resource Specialists to Southern California to help in the
wildfire recovery efforts. Eden I&R staff had 12 hour shifts that helped relieve exhausted Southern
California 2-1-1 staff. When, not if, Alameda County has a major earthquake (or other disaster) other
2-1-1 centers will reciprocate with assistance.
