Proposal. Because of the greater responsibilities which the driver/operators of the truck and en. gtnes are held accountable for, ! am proposing that the posttton of Fire Engineer he expanded. This expansion would create new Fire Engineer positions on the engines which are staffed dally. This would represent a change from three (3) Engineers on the truck to an additional six (6) positions for the engtnes, reflecting an annual Increase of approximately As these are new promotional positions, ! would propose to f111 them through- a testing process as we do other promotions. All department personnel tn the rank of Firefighter have been State Certified as Ortver/Operators; As such would propose to spin off from this tratntng and conduct a wrttten, practical application and oral-examination to select person~el to fill the positions. As tn any promotion, there ts a need to fill the pOsitton with someone who wants the posttton for the position itself and what ts required, rather than Just the monetary gatn; an of course the willingness and ability to do the job. The m~ntmum qualifications needed to apply for the posttton are: - The necessary knc~vledge and skt11 to perform the Job. - High school graduation or GED equivalent, - One year experience as a fire ftghter. - Possession of a valid California drtver's l~cense. - Possess~onof a valid California DJT-] Certtftcate.(Please see copy of attached job description for additional information.) Recommendation Staff reconmends the creation of a Fire Engineers' position on the staffed engines as well as the truck. Staff also recormends that the Fire Chief be directed to conduct the necessary testing process to fill the positions by April l, 1987 with the pay for the new positions to coninence on the day of the appointment.
