As noted previously, Bernal Park is constrained by two major ~actors the
provision in the Waiter Johnson bequest which prohibits public motor
vehicle use, and the rugged topography of this scenic site. These ~actors
necessarily determine a low level of development within the park~,.as is
~urther detailed below. In addition, one o~ the potentially major issues,
that o~ sa~e access ~or Pleasanton residents, has been resolved through
the provision o~ s staging area on the adjacent Golden Eagle Farms.

A, Am m ~mt_loa

The trail system is one o~ the primary ~eatures o~ the Master Plan for
Augustin Bernal Park. Although the existing trails are well mated with
careful consideration to the steep slopes o~ the site, access to them is
currently inadequate. The circulation concept described in the Master
Plan establishes a major vehicular point o~ entry to the park at a staging
area in Golden Eagle Farms. The area provided by Golden Eagle Farms
'through their development agreement with the City viii contain parking,
minimal restrooms, park interpretave displays~ and trailhead connections
~o the park. The entry ~rom Longview Drive is retained as an alternate
access point only, and will not provide parking. Longview Drive is an
extremely steep residential road, and would not be suitable for park
traffic. Pedestrian access will continue for hikers crosslng between the
two East Bay Regional parklands along the Ridgeline Trail.

According to the Raster Plan, the existing fire trail and the dirt road
through Golden Eagle Farms will become the major pedestrian system
through the site. In this way, park improvements can take advantage o~ the
existing trails system, and at the same time avoid the impacts o~
providing new ones. The first segment o~ the system,'there~ore, will be
the portion stemming from the staging area in Golden Eagle Farms, and will
be called the Golden Eagle Trail. The second leg, the portion which will
be the backbone o~ the hiking trails, called the Valley View Trail, will
connect the Golden Eagle Trail to the summit Ridgeline Trail. The
Ridgeline Trail is partially realigned near its junction with Valley View
Trail where the two trails has paralleled each other across an open
meadow. From the Valley View Trail, two "short cut" connectors, and one
traversing trail will be introduced to add variety and allow ~or access to
day use picnic areas. Rustic signs will be placed at each trail Junction
to help orient visitors to the park. View/rest stops consisting o~ simple
log benches will be located alonG all trails to take advantage o~ views or
site ~eatures.

Some maintenance is necessary on the already well-sited hillside trails,
to alleviate conditions where water seepage and clogged culverts have
arcdad trail surfaces. This will require the re, fading and of some trail
segments~ along with the repairing o~ neglected culverts. In some areas
additional aggregate should be placed to improve grades and drainage.

-? -
