City of asanton
e

REP RT
J

July 21, 1987

HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
Pleasanton, California

Approval of Master Plan for Augustin Bernal Community Park

Mayor and Members of the Council:

Background

In 1971 Walter S. Johnson gave 230 acres of park land to the City
of Pleasanton. Augustin Bernal Community Park, as it was named
in the Johnson bequest, is primarily undeveloped land that
includes both steep hillside lands and ridgetop grassland. The
land has been used for cattle grazing by Golden Eagle Farms
Ranch.

The park site, roughly rectangular in shape, is bordered by East
Bay Regional Park District lands to the west and south, by
Kilkare Woods on the west, Golden Eagle Farm on the east and
privately owned residential land on the north. Because of its
location, Augustin Bernal Park is a crucial link to utilization
of the park lands held by E.B.R.P.D.

While the City has owned the park land since 1971, it has had
limited use due to limited access. The only access to the
property at this time is at the lower Longview cul-de-sac. Park
users must park at the foot of Longview and walk up Longview to
access the entry driveway. Future access to the park will be
through a new road and staging area as per an agreement developed
between the City and the Walter Johnson Foundation. That access
will be controlled by hour and volume with every effort to limit
access to local use.

Master Plan - Summary

The Augustin Bernal Park Master Plan, prepared by Kent Watson and
Associates, is constrained by two major factors - the provision
in the Walter Johnson bequest which prohibits public vehicular
access and the rugged topography.

SR87:334
