Fr. Dan Danielson, Pastor, Catholic Community of Pleasanton, addressed the City
Council noting the history of the application and added that the Church's current
facility had become too small and there was a need for staff and other office space,
a chapel for smaller services and daily mass. He noted the proposed development
addresses the needs of the Church and its service to the community, including the
community center. He stressed the need for the property on the other side if they
are to build a school. He noted they do not feel they will need to add more parking
for this building as they will not be in competition with themselves. He agreed
there is a parking issue that has to do with the 6:30 p.m. issue on Sunday nights.
It is a problem on their parking lot and it will be dealt with as there is only one
Mass/one service. He stressed they do not have an arrangement with the parking
lot in which Fountain Church is located. He noted they would like to have parking
along Stoneridge Drive because of the easy access and staff supports that. He
added there are two separate issues; one is the building and the other is the
parking issue that exists whether there is a building or not. He concluded by
asking the Council to support the Planning Commission's decision and conditions.
John Miller, project architect, addressed the City Council and went into great detail
about the placement of the building, parking features, design and circulation of the
proposed project. He commented on noise concerns and noted there are no
windows on the side of the gym; the lighting comes from skylights above. He
spoke about the design of the gym and addressed concerns regarding mass, bulk
and height of the buildings and explained how they addressed buffers for sound.
In response to questions, Mr. Miller addressed the configuration of the buildings,
height, sound and parking issues.
In response to inquiring regarding the feasible of moving the gymnasium, it was
noted they wished to keep a low building profile toward the corner for aesthetic and
masking reasons.
Michael Gallagher addressed the City Council in support of the project. He stated
he believes this Center will be a benefit to the community in general. He asked for
those in the audience who favored the project to waive their hands. A majority of
the audience supported the project. He commented on parking issues and noted
through the entire process they have tried to be good neighbors and concluded by
asking the Council to support the project and deny the appeal.
Rick Hankins spoke of the CYO program and how it benefits youth and their
families. He addressed traffic concerns and feels the concerns have been
addressed. He noted they are good neighbors at other facilities and intend on
being a good neighbor at this facility. He urged the Council to support the project
and deny the appeal.
Greg Thome spoke in support of the proposed project. He commented on this
great community and the great volunteers in Pleasanton. He commented on
parking and traffic concerns and noted the average traffic numbers are acceptable.
City Council Minutes 7 January 16, 2007
