Mr. Fialho said it would be possible. He noted that part of the Business Council's job is
to create a forum and strategy for addressing economic development and the City of Pleasanton
is a stakeholder in this process. He would not want to create a situation where if Pleasanton
disagreed with some of the direction, the option is to hold $15,000 over the Business Council.
He agreed with Mr. Brozosky's comments and if Council sees value in this, as staff does in
terms of the reports that are generated which can be used for other purposes, then it is valuable
from that perspective. He pointed out that the City has a seat at the Executive Roundtable
where it did not before and, therefore, Council could influence the outcome through this
process.
Mr. Thorne said he would support allocating $25,000.
It was moved by Mr. Thorne, seconded by Mr. Brozosky, to allocate $25,000 to the
Tri-Valley Business Council to support regional economic development programs.
The roll call vote was taken as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers - Brozosky, McGovern, Thorne, Sullivan, and
Mayor Hosterman
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
ABSTAINED: None
6e
Selection of a desian alternative for the second Bernal Avenue Bridae. Arrovo De La
Laauna. (SR 05:277)
Mr. Wilson presented the staff report.
Bruce Jett, representing Bruce Jett Associates, presented the two design options for the
new bridge and five options for railings for the existing historic bridge.
Mr. Wilson noted that staff is recommending the historic concrete option in combination
with option B of the existing bridge railing options. Option B brings components of the new
bridge (pilasters at both ends of the bridge and a metal railing) to the existing historic bridge, but
recognizes the separate identities of the two bridges. This option also provides metalwork that
is more similar to the metal work of the historic bridge by the use of crossing steel members at
the bottom of the railing. In addition to creating an asymmetric new bridge with respect to the
railings, the design requires additional width as the extra guardrail between the sidewalk and
metal rail takes up space in the bike lane and sidewalk, which will add to the structure costs for
the bridge.
Ms. McGovern said she would like the existing bridge to remain because of its history.
Mr. Jett pointed out that the new bridge would be a simple box frame structure that does
not contain any overhead metal work. The existing metal bridge would remain and the new
bridge would be located on the south side of the crossing.
Ms. McGovern asked if the second Bernal Avenue Bridge would have metal work on it?
Mr. Jett said no.
Pleasanton City Council 25 1 0/04/05
Minutes
