Ms. Narum would like to see something like rose gardens such as appear in
Golden Gate Park on a small scale. No structures and very passive.

Ms. McGovern wanted lawn areas to throw a Frisbee or lay on the grass, but not
used for organized sports.

Mr. Rasmussen asked if tree areas were important? Somewhere where trees
are grouped near meadow areas. The trees would be Iow, so as not to block views.

Mr. Brozosky felt the trees were needed for shade.

Mr. Sullivan said he liked everything he had heard so far. The Golden Gate Park
idea of meadows separated by trees was very good.

Mr. Rasmussen said that same concept was used on the other side of the
freeway to provide little pockets of areas for people to gather in a meadow.

Mr. Brozosky wanted some contour to the land instead of leaving it completely
flat. He believed if there are little hills to walk around, it makes the area seem larger
when everything is not seen at once. He acknowledged there could be problems with
the amount of dirt required and drainage, but it would be nice for contours or mounds.

Mayor Hosterman said her biggest concern is this is California, not Oregon,
Washington or even San Francisco. The park should resemble the surrounding area
and plantings should be similar to what is naturally on the Ridge, such as oak. A grove
of redwoods would be out of character.

Mr. Rasmussen pointed out that the Fotheringham plan was focused in that
direction.

Mr. Brozosky wanted the park to be welcoming. Sometimes when a park is really
natural, people just drive on by. He felt it did not have to be all native plants. He
wanted trees for shade and noted that at the Pleasanton Sports Park, willow trees are
not native, but many people hang out by them.

Mr. Rasmussen asked if there was a desire to have the teen center integrated
into the park or at the sports fields.

Mayor Hosterman felt a teen center concept was important to be included, but
should not be located right next to any other facility. She did not think it was critical to
be specific on its location at this time.

Ms. McGovern said there was a youth master plan in process for a community
center. It includes the idea that a teen center would not be used while they were in
school, but if it were next to a community center, there could be use of the building
during the day for parents and children, and at 3:00 p.m. it automatically becomes a
teen center. She wanted to utilize space well. Landscaping can draw people in and
create additional space for activities. Teen centers she has visited were close to skate
Joint Workshop
City Council and Parks and Recreation Commission
14 05/12/05
