In response to an inquiry by Mr. Brozosky, Dana Gill, Executive Director, Lifetime
Tennis, Inc., estimated the tennis court usage at the Facilities is used about 400 hours per
week.

Mr. Wolfe noted that staff has discussed with the Tennis Operator, that it would like gain
additional usage of the tennis courts, and much of this would be primarily during times where
staff has experienced difficulty in getting any usage, such as during lunch hours and early
afternoon during the week days. Staff is encouraging the Tennis Operator to work and market
the Facilities.

Mr. Brozosky questioned the minimum hours of operation for Sunday from 8 a.m. to 8
p.m., and asked if it made sense, particularly during the summer.

Mr. Wolfe said staff's experience has been that after 8 p.m. on a Sunday, people
generally are focusing on the workweek or school, even during the summer hours. It is an
option that is available that could be discussed with the Tennis Operator if Council would like to
expand these hours. The difficulty is in advertising and staff needs to be consistent when
advertising the hours of operation. Currently, the hours of operation on Sunday are from 8 a.m.
to 7 p.m.

Mr. Fialho suggested that if there is an interest in expanding the hours of operation on
Sunday to a later hour, that it be part of the discussion of the Parks and Recreation
Commission.

Mr. Brozosky agreed.

Ms. McGovern said she was looking at this matter from three different points of view.
She noted Council has heard that Muirwood Park is too noisy and the tennis courts are not
utilized. She would like the Parks and Recreation Commission to review the use of this Park
and question whether there are ways to enhance this facility so that it could be used. She
wanted Council to discuss alternatives for working with the School District regarding the
potential lighting of tennis courts at Pleasanton Middle School, and possible implementation of
an "on demand" tennis reservation system utilizing existing tennis courts at Foothill and Amador
Valley high schools. She referred to Section 4.04 - Drop-In/Open Play of the contract which
included an additional statement that reflects that Lifetime Tennis Inc., shall maintain two non-
reservation courts at all regular hours of operation for residents of Pleasanton, unless if used by
Lifetime Tennis for group lessons.

Mr. Wolfe said this was subject to staff's approval.

Ms. McGovern wanted the community to always know what benefits are available to
them. She would prefer not to have this statement reflected in the contract because it would
make the community aware that there are two nonreservation courts available at regular hours
of operation for residents of Pleasanton and they will come and play. It would make it seem as
if there are two courts available for play when in fact these courts could be used for group
lessons a majority of the time.

Mr. Wolfe said the Tennis Operator would not object to amending the contract to state
that two courts are available for drop-in play at all times.

Ms. McGovern said she would appreciate having this section of the contract amended.
She noted that Section 4.04 also stated that an additional four courts should be reserved for

Pleasanton City Council 13 05/17/05
Minutes
