(SR 05:108)

Steve Bocian, Deputy City Manager, presented the staff report.
Mr. Sullivan asked if any lighting was associated with the signs?
Mr. Bocian said no.

Mr. Sullivan asked staff if it had received any feedback from businesses m support of
these signs.

Mr. Bocian said staff conducted public meetings on this matter and only received
comments from the general public and none from local businesses.

Ms. McGovern asked if a gateway sign is currently located at Stanley Boulevard and
Valley Avenue?

Mr. Bocian said a sign is currently located in that area that has the wording "City of
Pleasanton.'"' This sign is more of a service club sign rather than a gateway sign. Staff is
currently considering the potential of renovating and/or replacing the service club signs
throughout the City. As part of the operating budget, staff is looking at the potential of working
closely with the various Civic Clubs to improve the quality of these signs.

Mr. Fialho clarified that the City would not replace the service club signs. The idea
would be to find several locations in town where service clubs could identify their seals. Rather
than replacing the existing service club signs, staff would identify which signs needed to be
retained and refurbish them so that they are ecstatically pleasing.

Ms. McGovern asked if there were any locations where the proposed City gateway
signage would be installed where development might occur that would either damage the signs
or require them to be removed as part of the development, such as the Stanley Boulevard area
near McDonalds and the Auf der Maur property.

Mr. Fialho said Council could condition the placement of the gateway signage at
westbound Stanley Boulevard before Valley Avenue as part of the development, and as
roadway improvements are being conducted and enhancements to the medians.

Ms. McGovern was not aware of the past history related to this project and asked if this
- ~ project was a done deal? She asked if this project was time sensitive or could it wait and be a
part of the Operating Budget and Capital Improvement Program process?

Pleasanton City Council 9 05/03/05
Minutes
